Gas hobs and gas hob installations

New hob installation 20th Apr 14I often get called up by customers who might be updating their kitchens, or their old cooker or hob has simply packed up! It might be that they’re looking for a more controllable and cheaper way of cooking than by using electric so want to upgrade to gas. The first thing to check out is if there is an existing gas supply to, or near to, the intended location for the new appliance. If not, I would need to take the supply from the nearest available point. If there’s already a gas supply already in place, it should be relatively straightforward to supply the necessary pipework to the new hob complete with an isolation point prior to the appliance, assuming the pipework is sized correctly in order to supply enough gas according to how much the manufacturer has intended it to use. I get lots of calls from customers looking for gas hobs and gas hob installations, and quite often I can also supply the new appliance too. Another point worth noting is to ensure that a replacement hob is as near as possible in size to the existing one – certainly no smaller – otherwise there’s going to be a big gap between the new hob and the worktop! Going larger is obviously more doable, as you can always cut out a larger hole in the worktop, assuming the worktop is constructed of a material that can easily be cut. One particular customer contacted me last week as he had suddenly noticed that gas was escaping around the edge of the appliance, where it met the worktop – a very dangerous situation indeed. In this case, the gas pipe inside the appliance had worked its way lose from one of the burner’s gas taps. For the cost and awkwardness of repair, it was actually cheaper to buy a straight replacement which was duly installed and commissioned. Not only this, but gas hobs and burners tend to get easily clogged up with food splashes, grease and oil from cooking so tend to be not the most servicable of appliances. Once they start to get harder to use, or worse still – unsafe, I would always getting a brand new replacement.
